fresh paint

ahhh! the apartment is now painted and everything is back in its right place I've got to go spin some Radiohead!! (if you don't know Radiohead..they've got a song titled Everything In Its Right Place) Wow what a week this has been. Up late a few nights (I mean really really late) and up super early to move furniture and stuff for the painter. Singular. She's a one-woman show and she did the place in two days. Whoopah!

So after putting most of the outlet and light switch covers back on, I decided to set one aside and I decoupaged it this morning before work. It was such a soothing act, tearing paper and gluing it down. It was nice because although I wanted to piece something kind of coherent together I wasn't too concerned about the outcome and I'm happy with how it came together. It's in the bathroom next to a small silk kerchief hanging of two japanese ladies:

Next week or maybe the week after new carpet will be installed and I get to tear things apart again...but this time, only two rooms need to be moved, but everything has to go out on the porch. It'll be so worth it. After all that I'll be so buff.

Uh huh.

It's friday already!! Officially, it's still friday here but my glass slippers are about to morph into birkenstocks - in about fifteen minutes. This week's theme:

self-portraiture

I've heard of such things. Well tonight I worked on some covers for decos I'm making and realized I could do a Self Portrait Tuesday with them. I picked one.

It's a monoprint, I used acrylics - I put a picture underneath a pane of glass, and then painted over it a few lines at a time. I must have registered the paper upwards of fifty times. I love seeing the image emerge, layer after layer until...voilà! It's always a surprise because although you do have some control over where to put the paint and what color/combinations to use, the paint often does unexpected things, but it's always cool-looking, I think.

I just checked out the SPT site and apparently there is a major overhaul going on. So I'm not linking yet, not until I read more about it, and not until I get some decent good night's sleep! Once again I am nosing into the wee hours...

Illustration Friday - Here Spot!

Done with a digital camera in video mode...that little microphone is powerful, you can hear the pop pop pop every time I pause it and re-start it. Not too original idea-wise but very fun for me in the rising technology mixed with low-tech arena.

Christopher Robin

That's my brother's name. My mom told me when I was a kid, that Christopher used to eat bird seed and hold an umbrella and want to jump off the roof, thinking he could fly. Now that sounds like a big brother I'd like to have around - fun times! We didn't grow up together though; however, when I did see him he'd tease me mercilessly.

Last thing I ever heard from him was via email. It was six years ago and he said that he hadn't heard me talk about my 'artsy fartsy stuff' and what was up with that, basically. Well...here I am, finally doing art every day just like I love to. Pretty damn cool. Hey Chris - did you send me to the library when that Mail Art exhibit was on? Cause it's changed my whole life.

Here are a couple ten-second ink drawings for you...RIP, bro - miss you with much immenseness.

He was married to the bike, a true desert rat as well - always riding or climbing something.

(Dad in case you are visiting - you can click on the pics to go larger)

Do you ever get over the weirdness of people turning from an animated bag of bones to a lifeless lump of flesh?! It's just...bizarre..the whole thing is bizarre. Miraculous and cool as all hell, but - did I mention bizarre?

Illustration Friday

...well okay, it's a day late, but it's MY friday - my weekend is here now, woo!

This week's topic: SPEED

So I'm thinking, ya know, 'in the blink (or two) of an eye...' I gotta get familiarized with Photoshop, ImageReady, and also Flash (which I now have) so I can make my own gifs. But for now, messing around with my digital camera is pretty fun, nothing fancy, but fun!

Soundtrack is Claire Voyant's Pieces.

diacritics

Comment ça va?

It worked! A certain bandoneon-player across the sea in Switzerland gave me a tip on how to put the accents and squigglies where I need to, and I learned about unicode. O happy day galoob galay. Never has a curl under a c pleased me so much. I hope you can all see that.

And now, just because I can, un mot du jour en français:

râle/ment: rattling in the throat; death rattle

It was a random pick, but.....perversely apropos in light of family member's expiry month anniversary.

bon soir

3 days down

Went for a nice bike ride today along the river...very blustery! The wind seemed to switch directions so that no matter which way I headed it wasn't ever at my back. Well...that's not true...the final 3/10th of a mile (how many th's of a kilometer is that?) I fairly sped home. Feelin' a bit better today. Time to check in with my pal Veronica (Mars, that is) and then check out for a few hours. Happy April 3, y'all.

Spring Forward

Nine years ago today, my mother was buried in a cemetery in Ogden, Utah. During the goodbye bit that some churchgoer was administering, a crow flew close-by calling out three times in a sharp loud raspy voice. I glanced around but no one else seemed to notice. Maybe they were asphyxiated on the bishop's voice. My brother vowed to come back each year and glug a can of Coors in her memory (she stopped drinking beers to go back to church) and piss on her grave. Did he say that part or did I make it up? Well he never did that; he died a few years later and had moved out of state and back in.

I don't know, if I had worked today, would I feel as affected. But I sure do feel somber. I've been painting dark things today, but tinged with a bit of color here and there. I had plans to don my thinking cap, which really does look like a fool's cap, and get silly. Those plans can wait.

I really do hope she is resting in peace somehow, somewhere, for her own sake. She went out with renewed piss and vinegar, spitting at my sister all the way though! Yeah! True colors! It's okay mom we still love you!
